OBJECTIVE:
The student will understand the role of the natural resources needed to support the operation of the Jamestown Glasshouse.

ACTIVITY MATERIALS:
History of Glassmaking at Jamestown
Glassblowing Narration


 

ACTIVITY:
1. Print copies of The Glasshouse History and read it in the classroom
2. Print and read copies of the Glassblowing Narration
3. Watch the Glassblowing Demonstration Video
4. When finished, allow the students to generate a class discussion using the questions below.

a. What local natural resources were needed to make the Glasshouse, glass furnaces and the glass?
b. The color of the glass made from the local natural ingredients is green. What impurity in the sand causes the glass to be green?
c. How did the glassmakers make different colors of glass such as clear, blue, and brown?
d. Why was glassmaking done for only 5 days during a month?
e. Do you think that glass making was resource intensive? Why?
