We all know 1988 as the year of the Yellowstone National Park fire, however few remember it as a year of Western Fires.Several firefighters from Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore were on one of those intense fires in Idaho, and were lucky to make it home.

The Brauer Museum of Art has in its collection many fine works by such noted Dunes artists as Frank V. Dudley, Earl H. Reed, and Vin Hannell.The Brauer will feature these in the upcoming summer exhibition.

Porter County Museum

"Camp Good Fellow"

Camp Good Fellow, which operated in the forests outside the Indiana Dunes from 1941-1976, represents a unique blend of Northwest Indiana's industrial and environmental cultures. Now the location of the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center, the Camp was built by U.S. Steel and each summer saw 60-100 children of U.S. Steel employees. The Camp Good Fellow exhibit at the Porter County Museum displays a unique collection of artifacts and photographs that describe the social project that brought together diverse children from across the region to learn about the history and environment of the Indiana Dunes.
