Wildland fire is an important part of the ecology of Indian Dunes National Park. The Wildland Fire Management team is responsible for fighting, prescribing, and studying wildland fire within the park.

The goals of the Fire Management program at Indiana Dunes National Park are to manage wildland fire to protect the public and communities, conserve natural and cultural resources, and restore and maintain ecological health.

The Fire Management program at Indiana Dunes National Park encompasses a wide variety of disciplines. The national park fire management staff includes: the fire management officer, a wildland fire specialist, a fire program managment assistant, firefighters, fire effects personnel, and a fire prevention and mitigation technician. They perform a full range of wildland fire management operations and services, including; fire prevention and education, planned ignitions and suppression of unplanned ignitions, hazard fuels management, monitoring, and research.

The most current Wildland Fire Management Plan is available online as a series of interactive webapps and an accompaying PDF document. The FMP can be found here. It is best viewed on a laptop or desktop computer for ease of viewing.

Great Lakes Fire Management Zone

The Wildland Fire Management team at Indiana Dunes National Park is also responsible for overseeing the fire management operations of the Great Lakes Fire Management Zone. The Great Lakes program oversees fire operations at 12 other National Park Service sites in the Midwest.
