Junior Ranger Poetry 2007

During the 2007 Summer Junior Ranger program every junior ranger participated in a day-long "Arts in the Park" program. During that day they meet with Artist-in-Residence Sharon Hammer Baker. The 7-9 year-old children took a hike. During the hike they wrote poetry and created an art project. Some of these poems are on temporary display at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center until early September 2007.

At the Chesterton Art Center, the 10-12 year-old children learned simple line drawing techniques, wrote poetry inspired by nature paintings, and created a stained glass project.

Watch as these three Junior Rangers share their poetry.

At the Beach in Hawaii

It was a very breezy day,
I wish I was there to feel the sand in my hands,
To feel the ocean water,
Five coconuts on one tree,
Palm trees are in my view,
And the sand is very cool
And wet from hide tides
Clouds are dark and the day is dark
And the palm trees are green

A Painting of an Old Lighthouse

A great lighthouse protects ships from a raging lake
Tall breakers crash against a valiant seawall
Small sandbars are seen under an angry sky
As the storm calms,
A bright sun shines upon the lighthouse
The old stubborn lighthouse lives to fight another day.

Birds and Leaves

Owls are hiding
Doves are resting
Leaves are rustling

The dove is at home,
And the Owl is visiting
Birds are chirping
