Safety

As the Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail covers over a thousand miles, many sites and trails may not be monitored for months. When planning your visit, we recommend to follow these basic tips:
  • Plan Your Route: many sites may be difficult to find, and GPS is not always available. Make sure you know how to get somewhere, even without a GPS.
  • Stay Supplied: Many sites are far away from population centers. Before heading to a rural area, make sure you have enough gasoline, food, and water to get back to a service station.
  • Check the Weather: A storm or snow may lead to blocked roads, or dangerous driving conditions. Make sure you have a plan for bad weather.
  • Dress Appropriately: If you plan on hiking, make sure you wear long pants, a comfortable shirt, sunglasses, strong boots, and sunscreen.
