Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway near Checkerboard Mesa

Opened in 1930, the Zion- Mount Carmel Highway presented a formidable challenge to provide easier vehicular access to Zion Canyon. A dramatic series of switchbacks lined with random ashlar retaining walls lead down to the Virgin River, offering spectacular views and scenery along the way such as this geologic feature known as Checkerboard Mesa.11
