PETRIFIED FOREST NATIONAL PARK
Painted Desert Inn (1924; rebuilt 1937-1940)

In the 1940s, architect Mary Jane Colter updated the building, changing the interior color schemes and hired Hopi artist Fred Kabotie to paint a series of murals. Completed in 1948, the murals incorporated ceremonial and religious symbolism as well as scenes of everyday Hopi life.20 One of the murals can be seen in this photograph of the dining room.
