National Park Service to Continue Deer Management Program on Fire Island and the William Floyd Estate

PATCHOGUE, NY – Deer removal operations will take place at Fire Island National Seashore this month. The park’s White-tailed Deer Management Plan will be implemented in January on National Park Service (NPS) lands on Fire Island and at the William Floyd Estate.

NPS is charged with maintaining a balanced ecosystem for the benefit of the environment and for current and future visitors to enjoy. White-tailed deer damage plants and eat most native plant species. Having an overabundance of deer in these areas shrinks the size of our forested areas and prevents forest regeneration. Damage from deer also decreases habitat available for native birds and other wildlife.

Highly qualified wildlife professionals will carry out the removal operations on both Fire Island and at the William Floyd Estate. Deer reduction activities will take place on federal lands only. When operations take place, areas of the park will close for the public’s safety.
