Gates of the Arctic National Park is vast and remote. There are no roads, or airports. The most common way to travel is in small airplanes, often equipped with floats like these for landing on lakes and rivers.

While the weather here can be tough and challenging, there are also times when the lake is mirror-calm and serene, and the only sound is the cry of a loon.
