Western Colorado's Hidden Gem

Curecanti National Recreation Area

Have you ever wanted to be able to cast a line into clean mountain water surrounded by mountains, mesas, and canyons? If so, Curecanti National Recreation Area is your destination!  Located 16 miles west of Gunnison, Colorado lies Blue Mesa Reservoir, the largest body of water in Colorado with 96 miles of shoreline and stretching more than 20 miles along the Gunnison River. Blue Mesa is an angler’s dream, providing fishing opportunities for a variety of fish including lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and kokanee salmon.  Not an angler?  No worries, there is an abundance of other ways to enjoy the recreation area, including hiking, camping, hunting, boating and picnicking.

In 1965 the National Park Service and the Bureau of Reclamation created Curecanti National Recreation Area to not only bring millions of visitors to enjoy the deep blue waters of the reservoir but, more importantly, to produce power and water storage for numerous households and those across the bordering states from the three dams and reservoirs located within the area.

The next time you dream of your new National Park adventure, take time to visit Curecanti National Recreation Area’s breathtaking scenery and fun activities, we promise you that you will not be disappointed!
