23rd Cavalry Regiment was formed during the spring of 1862 with men from Centerville,
Denton, Cooper, Palestine, and Clarksville, and Bowie and Hopkins counties. It was assigned to
H. Bee's and Debray's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, and fought in various conflcits in
Louisiana. In January, 1864, the unit contained 33 officers and 451 men, and later took an active
part in the engagements at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. It was included in the
surrender in June, 1865. The field officers were Colonel Nicholas C. Gould, Lieutenant Colonels
J.A. Corley and Isaac A. Grant, and William R. Caton.
