In 1861, Ambrose Wright joined the Confederate Army as a colonel in the 3rd Georgia Infantry. He served in the Norfolk, VA area and, following the battles of Seven Pines, received command of his own brigade. He led his forces at Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and temporarily broke through Union defenses on Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg. He continued the war in Virginia before he was transferred to the Army of Tennessee in August 1864. He was promoted to major general and served in the Savannah and Carolinas Campaign shortly before the war'³ end.
