- There are few records of Powers' service during the Civil War, with the exception of his leadership at the Battle of Plains Store during the siege of Port Hudson. In May 1863, Colonel Powers commanded his forces in a Battle at Plains Store, Louisiana. This action was a victory for the Union, and the last Confederate escape route from Port Hudson was closed.
