- On April 7, 1863, as part of a joint operation, Rear Admiral DuPont, in command of the South Atlantic Squadron, bombarded Fort Sumter, in the Confederate defenses of Charleston Harbor. The operation was unsuccessful in breaking the defenses of the city.
