Porter, David D.

Due to his previous service, Porter received a promotion to commander on April 22, 1861. He served on the Gulf coast, during the operations against New Orleans, and in the bombardment on Vicksburg. He commanded naval forces at the Battle of Arkansas Post. In October 1864, he took part in the attack on Fort Fisher. He spent the last several months of the Civil War in command of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron.
