In 1861 Walker joined the Confederate army. In March 1862 he received a promotion to major. Although he was ill during the Seven Days' battles, he returned to service in July 1862. He did not distinguish himself during his service; however, he did receive the rank of brigadier general in February 1865. With his new rank, Walker held command during the Battle of Appomattox Station in the last days of the war.
