- On August 28, 1861, the Union navy bombarded Forts Clark and Hatteras, in advance of a Union landing party, which came ashore and attacked. On August 29, Colonel Martin surrendered his Confederate garrison of 670 men ending the Battle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries.
