- Bio:
- Lieutenant Colonel White was in command of Fort Macon, a third system casemated masonry fort that commanded the channel to Beaufort. In late March 1862, Union Gen. Ambrose Burnside laid siege to the fort. Within a few hours, the walls began to collapse, and the Confederates soon surrendered the fort.
