Stuart's Company, South Carolina Artillery (Beaufort Volunteer Artillery)
- Overview:
- Beaufort Light Artillery was organized early in 1862 with men from Beaufort County. It served in various locations along the coast attached to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The unit had 8 wounded at Pinckney Island, reported 1 killed and 13 wounded at Coosawhatchie, and in April, 1863, was involved in the capture of the Federal steamer George Washington. Later it was stationed at Pocotaligo and in December, 1864, at Coosawhatchie with 108 men. During January, 1865, the battery was assigned to B.H. Robertson's Brigade, then it served in Rhett's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Tennessee. It participated in the North Carolina Campaign and surrendered in April. Its captains were Stephen Elliot, Jr. and H.M. Stuart.
