9th Battalion, Mississippi Sharpshooters

9th Battalion Sharpshooters [also called Chalmers' Sharpshooters] was organized during the fall of 1862 and mustered into Confederate service at Jackson, Mississippi. It contained three companies and served under Generals J.P. Anderson, Tucker, and Sharp. The unit fought in the difficult campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, was part of Hood's operations in Tennessee, and saw action in Bentonville. It lost 7 killed and 22 wounded at Murfreesboro and totalled 69 men and 50 arms in December, 1863. The battalion surrendered on April 26, 1865. Major William C. Richards was in command.
