Clarkson's Battery, Arkansas Light Artillery (Helena Artillery)

Overview:
Helena Light Artillery was formed at Helena, Arkansas, in May, 1861, and soon moved east of the Mississippi River. After fighting at Shiloh, and in the Kentucky Campaign, the company was assigned to L.E. Polk's Brigade, then T.R. Hotchkiss' Battalion of Artillery, Army of Tennessee. It participated in campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, was with Hood in Tennessee, and served in North Carolina. Its casualties at Murfreesboro were 3 killed, 2 wounded, and 1 missing, and at Chickamauga there were 6 wounded. In December, 1863, the unit had 71 officers and men present for duty, but few were included in the surrender on April 26, 1865. Captains J.H. Calvery, A.W. Clarkson, and Thomas J. Key were its commanders.
