4th Battalion, Alabama Infantry

16th Infantry Battalion, [also called 4th; also numbered 15th] formerly Clifton's 4th or 10th
Battalion, was organized at Corinth, Mississippi, during the spring of 1862. Containing six
companies, the battalion was active in the defense of Vicksburg and General Breckinridge's
operations near Baton Rouge. It fought at Corinth under General Rust, then was
assigned to Bufrod's Brigade, Department of Mississippi, and East Louisiana. During February,
1863, it merged into the 55th Alabama Regiment. Lieutenant Colonel John Snodgrass, and
Majors G.L. Alexander and John H. Gibson were its field officers.
