3rd Cavalry Regiment was formed at Tupelo, Mississippi, in June, 1862. It was made up
of independent companies which had seen prior service, some had fought at Shiloh. These companies were form
Monroe, Choctaw, Wilcox, Mobile, Perry, Dallas, Calhoun, and Autauga counties. The unit
served under Generals J.T. Morgan and W.W. Allen, and participated in the Battles of Bramlet's
Station, Perryville, Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, and Chickamauga. Later it fought in the
Knoxville and Atlanta
Campaigns, the defense of Savannah, and the conflicts at Aiken, Fayetteville, Bentonville, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill. Only
a few men were present when the Army of Tennessee surrendered in April, 1865. The field
officers were Colonel James Hagan, Lieutenant Colonel Tyirie H. Mauldin, and Majors Frank Y.
Gaines and Josiah Robins.
