Schedule a Channel Islands Live Distance Learning Program

Interact with a park ranger in your classroom—virtually—for a 30–45 minute live distance learning program. A team of scuba divers plunge into the park's kelp forest and encounter fish, lobsters, sea stars, kelp and more. Programs are conducted via Zoom.

How to participate

Technical requirements

  • Internet Connection (recommended: 600 Kbps. Check with your IT or test at speedtest.net)
  • Computer, tablet, or phone
  • Speakers and a microphone (built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth) – This program is interactive with the diver. In order to best participate, you will need a microphone so the diver can hear you.
  • Webcam (built in or USB plug-in)
  • TV, LCD Projector, or Smart Board

Before your program

Day of your program

  • Check that you have all of the technical requirements referred to above.
  • Connect via the specific link at the specific time sent in your confirmation email.
  • Communication with the diver: The diver will prompt the audience for a question or answer. Do not speak to the diver without this prompt. If there is more than one group participating, the diver will specify which group will answer. The diver must hold their breath when listening to a communication from the audience. When the diver asks for a communication from your group, please use a strong, clear voice and keep communications short. Practice this with your students prior to the program.

  • If diving is not possible due to unforeseen circumstances, we will do our best to work with you to reschedule your program; however, this is not guaranteed.

 

How to Schedule

The 30-minute Live Dive programs are typically offered on Wednesdays at 11:30 AM PST between October and May. Reservations can be made up to 4 months in advance.

To schedule a Live Dive distance learning program, you must complete and submit the Education Reservation Request Form below (NPS Form 10-1750).

  1. List "Live Dive" as the program title.
  2. List the program day already confirmed with park staff as the "Preferred Date of Visit." If you have not already confirmed a day with the park staff, please email chis_education with your interest in a program before completing the form.
  3. List the "Preferred Program Start Time" as 11:30 AM PST (adjust for your time zone) unless otherwise directed by park staff.

You will receive an email confirming your distance learning program reservation within two weeks. If you do not receive this within two weeks, email us at chis_education@nps.gov.

Authority: Public Law 114-289 National Park Service Centennial Act and 54 U.S.C. 100701 Protection, interpretation, and research in System.

Purpose: To administer education programs for education audiences including but not limited to school groups, scouting groups, extracurricular groups, and home school groups.
