Road construction will take place August through September on the main park road between the north entrance and the south entrance. Workers will be repairing areas where the road crosses the Gallo wash, replacing guard rails, resurfacing sections of pavement, and repairing the bridge that crosses the Chaco Wash. Visitors may experience periods of delay during this time. Visitors should watch for flaggers and follow all signage. There will be two eight day periods of road closure while the Chaco Wash bridge deck is being resurfaced. During these times, the park loop road will become two way to provide access to and from State Road 57. All travel on the loop road will follow a pilot car. Visitors will have access to all of the great houses along the loop road, but must wait in the parking areas for the pilot car traveling in the direction they wish to go. Visitors may then follow the pilot car to the next great house parking area. Due to safety concerns, bicycles will not be permitted on the loop road during these times. The construction, associated closures and traffic delays may result in inconvenience to visitors. The rehabilitation work will improve the driving surface of the roadway and ensure its longevity. Current road construction information may be obtained by calling Chaco Culture National Historical Park at 505-786-7014 and by pressing #4. |
