Considered difficult, this trail is 12 miles (19 km) long taking most hikers 14 hours to complete. There is an elevation change along this route of 2,050 feet (626 m). The trail begins at the road gate for the Guadalupe Ridge road along the scenic Desert Loop Road.

A free permit is required for all overnight use of the park’s backcountry which can be obtained at the visitor center during business hours.
