Harkers Island, NC – Hurricane Erin is forecast to be a threat to Cape Lookout National Seashore as current projections show the storm passing off the coast of Eastern North Carolina. Currently, Erin is expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip currents. Storm surge flooding and tropical storm conditions are expected beginning later today or tonight. The storm surge will be accompanied by large waves, leading to significant beach erosion and overwash. Wind speeds are expected to be equal to or exceeding 39 miles per hour over the duration of the storm.  

  • The Harkers Island Visitor Center will close today at 10 A.M. EDT. 

  • Visitors with upcoming Great Island Camp reservations should monitor the weather conditions. Cancelled reservations due to weather will be issued a full refund at www.recreation.gov, or call (877) 444-6777.  

  • Island Express Ferry Service will remain closed out of Beaufort and Harkers Island through Friday, at least. For more information call Island Express Ferry Service at (252) 728-7433 or go online to: islandexpressferryservices.com.   

  • Visitors with vehicle ferry reservations may call their respective ferry for more information regarding schedule and/or reservations at the following: For visitors heading to North Core Banks - Morris Marina (Atlantic, NC; (252) 225-4261), and for visitors heading to South Core Banks - Cape Lookout Cabins and Camps Ferry Service (Davis, NC; (252) 729-9751).   

The National Park Service staff will be monitoring ongoing developments with Hurricane Erin and will post updates or closures as needed on the park website at go.nps.gov/stormwatch, and via Facebook at facebook.com/CapeLookoutNPS and Instagram at CapeLookoutNPS.
