Ranger Guided

Students learn about the history of the lighthouse and the duties of the keepers with Ranger Munyan.

Park Rangers are available to speak to your class or group while they are visiting Cape Lookout National Seashore. The following programs may be requested from October through April. Programs are listed by suggested grade levels, but may be adapted to other grade levels.

Additional program topics may be available upon request.

Please make arrangements for a program at least 2 weeks in advance of your group's planned field trip. Call the Harkers Island Visitor Center (252-728-2250) or e-mail us to request a program. We do our best to accommodate these requests.

Lighthouses and Light Keepers (2 hours)
In the shadow of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, explore the history of the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" and get an inside look at life as a Lighthouse Keeper with stories from the diary of Keeper James Gillikin. 3rd, 4th, and 8th Grades. More Info

Sea Turtles (2 hours)
An interactive discussion introduces students to the lives of sea turtles and some of the threats to their survival. From there, the group will head to the oceanside beach for a closer look at what makes a good nesting site and a discussion of the journey of a newly hatched sea turtle. 4th, 5th, and 6th Grades. Coastal Creatures (2 hours)
Through an exploration of the diverse ecosystems of barrier islands, students will discover the ways in which plants and animals have adapted to this ever-changing habitat. This program can take place almost anywhere in the park. 4th, 5th, and 6th Grades. More Info

Horse Watching: Available by advance reservation, half-day and day-long horse watching trips are popular among wild-horse enthusiasts. Groups (usually organizations or classes) travel by charter ferry to Shackleford Banks island where they are met by program leaders. Tours include walking for miles in soft sand to find the horses, then standing or sitting a safe distance away to watch. Binoculars are recommended. More Info

Groups and classes visiting during the summer months are welcome to join the ranger for any of the park's regularly scheduled public programs.
