Imuruk volcanic field covers more than 100,000 acres within Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. The swirling black basalt formation are the result of over 5 million years of volcanic eruptions. The Lost Jim Cone is the largest volcanic vent and also one of the most recent, formed less than 2,000 years ago.
Hiking opportunities are numerous across this gently rolling landscape of broadly-domed summits and volcanic cones. The lava field is also a great place to view a variety of lichen species and the caribou that feed on them.
During the summer, access is by foot or non-motorized vehicle. The best way to reach the lava field is to land a small plane on the nearby tundra or on Imaġzruk (Imuruk Lake) and then walk.
