Join us in celebration of the 52nd Annual Iditarod!

Enjoy a full week of FREE programs at the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve Visitor Center. We are excited to partner with Norton Sound Health Corporation, Alaska Department of Fish & Game, Deja Vu Sled Dogs, and artists from near and far to bring you exciting talks and workshops. Join us for a snowshoe hike, try your hand at sled dog drawings, or break out your camera for night sky photography. We hope to see you there!

Monday, March 11

10:00 AM - Movie (50 min)
Waking the Baby Mammoth
“The discovery of a rare, well-preserved, juvenile, woolly mammoth provides an unparalleled opportunity to learn about this extinct species.”

1:00 PM - Talk (45 Min)
Virtual Tour of Bering Land Bridge!
Visit the preserve from the comfort of our Visitor Center. Explore hot springs, volcanic formations, archeological evidence, and more!

5:30 PM- Talk (1.5 hours)
Mushing Beyond the Iditarod Trail
Meet local mushers Sarah, and Keane of Deja Vu Sled Dogs and Burr and Tim of Comstock Kennels! They will share their story, give a virtual tour of their kennels, and introduce you to a few members of the team, including a litter of 6-week-old husky puppies!

Tuesday, March 12

10:00AM - Movie (30 min)
Arctic Currents: A Year in the Life of a Bowhead Whale
“The film explores whale taxonomy, physiology, diet, behaviors and their widespread movement through Subarctic and Arctic waters.”

1:00 PM - Talk (45 mins)
Muskox on the Seward Peninsula
Join Research Biologist Brynn from ADF&G for a talk on the iconic Ice Age animal that still roams Nome today!

3:00 PM - Excursion (2 hours)
Snowshoe Hike!
Join us on a guided snowshoe excursion on the tundra. Snowshoes and transportation provided! All youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Sign up early @ 907-443-6127 or at the Visitor Center! Max group size: 14

Wednesday, March 13

10:00 AM - TV Series (30 min)
Watch a local community member revive cultural practices on a documentary style TV series.

1:00 PM - Family Friendly Workshop (1 Hour)
Art in the Park
Listen to stories about growing up with sled dogs while learning to draw one, with local artist MaryJane.

3:00 PM - Talk (45 min)
The Original Race to Nome
Join Ranger Tori as she explores the Serum Run, the 1925 race to Nome that captured the world’s attention.

Thursday, March 14

10:00 AM- Movie (20 min)
Alaska Natives from the Seward Peninsula share their perspective on the loss of sea ice and how their traditional practices have transformed in response to a warming climate.

1:00 PM - Virtual Talk (45 min)
Ancient DNA of Dogs in the Arctic
Dogs are a vital part of life in the far north, but how long have they been here? Researchers Sarah and Chris dive into the evidence of ancient dogs on the Seward Peninsula.

3:00 PM - Excursion (2 hours)

Academy Award Nominated Short Film from the Arctic.

1:00 PM - Demonstration (1 hour)
Crafting with Qiviut
Explore how muskox fur, horns, and even lichen can be used to create beautiful works of art from experienced local crafter, Mikey.

3:00 PM - Workshop (1 hour)
Night Sky Photography
Join professional photographers Valerie and Michael to learn how to capture crisp photos of the night sky. Workshop is best for those with DSLR cameras.
