Yellowstone's 2018 Sustainability Spotlight Projects
Eliminating Plastic Straws
Both Delaware North and Xanterra made a commitment to reduce plastic waste from straws.
In 2018 Delaware North participated in a company-wide initiative to buy compostable straws which are only served to customers upon request at a Yellowstone General Stores locations—resulting in 25,000 fewer straws used! Employees also participated in environmental training on the impact plastic straws have on waterways and pollution.
In summer 2018, Xanterra continued to build on their long-standing “Choose to be Straw Free” campaign making a commitment to only purchase compostable straws. This program helps eliminate hundreds of thou-sands of plastic straws each year!
Eliminating Single-Use Plastic Water Bottles
Xanterra successfully launched a new program with Phillipsburg Brewing Company and Montana Silver Springs to bring a new, locally-sourced canned water product to Yellowstone. The product incorporates quality water from the newly reopened Montana Silver Spring which is packaged in an easily recyclable and closable aluminum can.
On-Site Cleaning Solutions Production
In summer 2018, Xanterra piloted a new electrolyzed water system to generate their own environmentally friendly, safe and affordable cleaning and sanitizing products.
The PathoSans system electrochemically activates regular tap water creating one solution to clean and one to sanitize. This system, installed in Mammoth, will completely eliminate the majority of chemicals used on location in favor of a product with a nearly negligible environmental impact.
