What is your name and job title? Tim Dyson, Budget Analyst for the Denver Service Center (DSC).

What education and experience do you have? I graduated from Metropolitan University of Denver with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and this past June I celebrated my ninth year at the National Park Service.

What is a typical day like? There isn’t truly a typical day at my job. Some days are spent processing our normal day-to-day budgetary work, planning for fiscal year milestones and others collaborating with folks to improve reporting or dashboards. Also, I really enjoy the fact that I get to interface with folks from all across the country and the folks in the office who travel to parks for their projects.

What career advice would you give to someone who wants to follow a similar path? I came to budget & finance from human resources, so it wasn’t always obvious where my career would take me. Over the years though I’ve tried to follow these points:

  • No matter the task big or small; do it to a high standard
  • Don’t take for granted the way anything works, always look for ways to improve
  • Engage your supervisor early and often with your desires for growth and learning
  • Always be willing to work and learn outside your comfort zone

What is one of the bigger projects you are working on and what about that project might surprise people? In DSC Budget we are always working on streamlining our processes and integrating data sources to enable our teams to work more seamlessly and data driven decision making. With the transition to Microsoft Office 365, we hope to leverage the Power platform of products to do this faster and better than ever before.
