Remington Nature Center

Today I visited the Remington Nature Center. It was so much fun! It is located in St. Joseph, Missouri, directly situated on the Missouri River. There were outdoor walking trails I could run up and down, right by the river! I saw lots of other dogs on the trail too.

There was so much to see and do inside the nature center. I even got to see a huge woolly mammoth! I thought President Jefferson said I would NEVER see one of these on the Lewis and Clark Trail, but I guess he was wrong, because I saw a baby mammoth with her mother. There was also a display of mammoth bones that were found here in Missouri. I couldn’t believe how big those guys were!

I saw a very large native fish aquarium here; it was 7,000 gallons of freshwater! There were lots of fish in it that can also be found in the river, such as catfish, bass, and crappie. The water in the aquarium is COLD, even in the summertime. There was an observation honey beehive too, where the bees can fly inside and outside. I know how important bees are for pollination, so it was great to see these ones being well taken care of!

I got to meet a snake on my journey too. Usually I avoid snakes but this one was very nice, and he curled up beside me. His name was Clyde, and he was an African Ball Python used for educational purposes. I also got to meet his mate, Bonnie. Who knew snakes could be so cuddly!?

I even saw a black bear! I know that bears can sometimes be mean, but this one wasn’t moving too much, so he was okay. I was told black bears normally weigh about 200 pounds, but this one is a whopping 630! There were lots of other animals here too, like a wolf, bison, bobcat, puma, and a feral hog!

The Nature Center has lots of Native American artifacts on display: pottery pieces, peace medals, and even some very old ones such as Clovis and Folsom points. Overall, there are more than 1,000 artifacts! I had fun seeing them so close up. It made me think about the people who perhaps made them, and what they were like. There were also Civil War and trapper displays, so I got to learn a lot about the animals that live here, and also the people that once lived here too.

I also did a scavenger hunt to find hidden items. Once I found them all, I got fun prizes! Be sure to ask the front desk about it so you can hunt too when you visit. I made sure to get a selfie to commemorate my time here before I left for my next destination.
