My Park Story: Mary Little

Where are you from? What was your pathway to National Park Service (NPS)?

I live in Lechee AZ on the Navajo Indian Reservation. I have worked as a fee technician for 18 seasonal years and 4 years permanent working with the budget department as a remitter. Currently I work as a front desk clerk at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Headquarters.

What interested you to work for the National Park Service?

I love Lake Powell! This beautiful color country is my backyard. I enjoy working with people from all walks of life that visits here at Glen Canyon.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

I like working with people that visits our park. Telling them about the surrounding areas and what they can enjoy during their trips. I like to sell federal park passes to the visitors so they can enjoy all national parks in the USA. To preserve and protect for further generation.

What advice do you have for youth and young adults thinking about a career at NPS?

Go to college and become someone in the National Park Service field.

What are your hobbies?

I like to go elk and deer hunting when the hunting season starts with my family.

Do you remember the first park you visited?

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area -this is our back yard playground.

What is your background? College? Study?

Extension course with Yavapai Community College for introduction to computer classes, reading, and basic courses. Coconino Community College refresher courses. Ohodum Nation Community College computer class. Flagstaff Indian Bible College.

Any favorite or funny memories of the job?

When I was locked out at the fee booth, me and co worker climbed through the sliding window.

What does it mean to represent your community?

I feel honored and proud of my employment working for the National Park Service.
