At a park as big and widespread as Gulf Islands, exhibits grouped into indoor facilities are not always the best way to share the incredible stories of the islands. Waysides provide onsite interpretation of the park’s natural and cultural resources that provide insight for park visitors at anytime. However, because waysides are outside in the elements including the baking sun, wind-blown sand, and salt air, wayside panels break down over time and need to be replaced every 10 years.

With the help of fee revenue, the park is able to maintain this cyclic replacement schedule. In 2017, this project provided for the replacement 52 wayside exhibits in the Mississippi areas of the park including, 22 on Ship Island and 30 at the Davis Bayou Area.
