Replacement of Lifesaving Station Windows
Year: 2013 Total cost: $51,849.72
The red-roofed historic lifesaving station in the park’s Fort Pickens Area is one of the most iconic buildings at the national seashore. Today the building serves as a ranger station and campground registration. To ensure the historic integrity of the structure is maintained, the park works hard to complete regular maintenance projects, including the replacement of all 36 windows in the structure.
Due to weather, salt spray and hurricanes many of the windows were leaking and causing damage to the historic structure before they were replaced. The replacement windows were also more in line with what was originally installed at the lifesaving station, returning the structure to more of its original style. The new windows not only ensured a safe working environment for park staff, but also helped maintain the historic building for generations to come.
