Biographical Note
Annie Delp Snyder was born in 1921 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She entered Allegheny College at 16 and graduated with a degree in English and history at 19. She was attending law school at the University of Pittsburgh in 1943 when she left to join the Marines, becoming one of the first 10 women to go through Officer Candidate Class at Mount Holyoke, Massachusetts. Her first assignment was to a Marine Recruiting Station in New Orleans, Louisiana. As one of the Marine Corps' first female officers, Mrs. Snyder was one of five women Marines to serve as models for the "Mollie Marine" statue located in New Orleans, the nation's first monument in to women in uniform, used to help recruit women during World War II. After marrying Waldon Peter Snyder shortly after V-J Day, 1945, she and her husband purchased an old farm place in Gainesville, Virginia, near Manassas National Battlefield Park and raised six children.
Over the next four decades, Mrs. Snyder would champion the cause of Manassas National Battlefield Park, located north of Manassas in Prince William County, Virginia, against a series of incursion attempts. The park preserves the site of two major American Civil War battles: the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861, and the Second Battle of Bull Run which was fought between August 28 and August 30, 1862 (also known as the First Battle of Manassas and the Second Battle of Manassas, respectively).
The first of these fights occurred in the 1950s as Mrs. Snyder successfully fought federal highway engineers who wanted to build an interstate highway that would have run through the middle of the battlefield located about 30 miles west of Washington, D.C. In the 1970s, she led a campaign that forced the Marriott Corporation to abandon its proposal to build a Great America theme park on nearby land.
In 1988, she began her biggest battle when Hazel/Peterson, the developer of a 540-acre residential-retail-office complex, announced the William Center, a 1.2 million-square-foot mall that would be the centerpiece of the development project. This center was planned for Stuart's Hill, the ridge where Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee directed his troops to victory at the Second Battle of Manassas in 1862. To oppose this development, Mrs. Snyder created the Save the Battlefield Coalition, which grew to include more than 120 history and preservation groups. They gathered more than 80,000 petition signatures and won the backing of several congressional leaders. These efforts resulted in Congressional approval to spend $120 million to buy the land. President Ronald Reagan signed the legislation on November 10, 1988 (Public Law 100-647), thereby preserving the site’s historical character and saving it from development.
In the mid-1990s, using the same techniques, Mrs. Snyder and other preservationists, including the National Trust for Historic Places and historians David McCullough and Shelby Foote, successfully stopped the Walt Disney company from completing plans to build an American-history theme park, housing, shops, and hotels on 3,000 acres about four miles from the battlefield.
Snyder died July 19, 2002 in Manassas, Virginia. She was 80.
Scope and Content Note
The Annie Snyder Collection consists of personal papers and documents created and maintained by Annie Snyder, founder and chair of the Save the Battlefield Coalition (SBC). Snyder became the public face of the SBC and led the fight for the preservation of many of the battlefields and historic areas in the Northern Virginia area.
The Annie Snyder Collection documents the administrative, operational, and cultural efforts of Snyder and the SBC to preserve Manassas National Battlefield Park and the surrounding area. Materials consist of correspondence, reports, press clippings, manuals, personal notes, signed petitions, and official documents. There are also audio-visual records including photographs, slides, negatives, videocassettes, and audiocassettes.
The bulk of the records document two causes championed by the Save the Battlefield Coalition—opposition to the William Center tract and opposition to the Walt Disney Company’s Disney’s America theme park. These records contain correspondence to and from government officials and the public, signed petitions from across the country protesting both developments, and voluminous press documentation. Also included are subject files containing research related to various issues concerning both projects.
