What is the Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet (FIMI) Project?
The Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet Project is a one-time, stand-alone placement of sand to stabilize Fire Island until the larger Fire Island to Montauk Point (FIMP) project is implemented. Suffolk County and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation are the local sponsors of this US Army Corps of Engineer-designed and funded project.

What is happening?
Weeks Marine, the contractor completing the beach nourishment, is moving their beach fill crew and equipment in November 2019 to Westhampton to complete sand placement due to a strict threatened and endangered species environmental window. The FIMI project on Fire Island has received a waiver for the threatened and endangered species environmental window so the FIMI project can be completed into the spring 2020. Weeks Marine will return to complete the FIMI beach fill immediately upon completing Westhampton.

What communities are delayed for FIMI?
Ocean Bay Park and Point O' Woods will be receiving planned sand placement upon the dredges return to the project area (Fire Island) within the planned contract duration.

What is the timeline for Weeks Marine to come back to Fire Island?
Weeks Marine plans to return to Fire Island and resume the FIMI project anywhere between February 15th and April 26th.

When is the end date for the FIMI contract 3B2?
Contract completion for FIMI 3B2 is June 19, 2020.

Will Brownie, the contractor doing the dune cross-over installations, still be working, and where?
Brownie will still be working through the coming months. A work plan is being developed but it will likely include all communities involved in FIMI 3B2 (Davis Park to Ocean Bay Park).

When will dune planting occur?
Dune planting for Davis Park through Cherry Grove will start around the first week of December and continue until completion. Ocean Bay Park and Point O' Woods will likely not be planted until next fall (Oct. 2020) due to the timing of return of Weeks Marine to complete beach nourishment.

Where should people expect to see staged equipment from Weeks Marine or Brownie while beach nourishment is stopped?
Equipment staging will occur in contract designated staging areas. There is a staging area in Ocean Bay Park, Fire Island Pines and Davis Park that will likely be used.
