Randall Roseland is the lead maintenance worker at Devils Tower National Monument in northeast Wyoming. He has been a part of our team just over one year. Before working for the National Park Service (NPS), Roseland served with the US Army. After three years as an infantry paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, Roseland served as a heavy equipment operator with the South Dakota National Guard for ten years. His military service included deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, and had him assisting with state emergencies like floods, fires, and blizzards.

“My military experiences taught me to challenge myself, to continue growing,” says Roseland. Whether it was solving problems with limited resources, or simply learning to operate important tools and equipment, Roseland cites his time in the military as a strong foundation for his current job at Devils Tower. After leaving the service, he missed the camaraderie with his fellow soldiers. That bond is something he found again when he joined the NPS.

Growing up in Newell, South Dakota, Roseland was raised not too far from the Tower. He had never considered the monument as a job opportunity, however. “When I saw a job open [at Devils Tower], I leapt at the chance to become a part of that history.” Roseland continues: “Now I get to help preserve this beautiful place for millions of people to see for generations to come, and I love that.”
