A 250,000-gallon underground cistern to capture rainwater for irrigation is installed on the National Mall.  This cistern will collect stormwater that falls around the National Mall and will keep nutrients and sediments from entering the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay while providing watering for the turf without having to tap into the city water supply.
