Bat Projects in Parks: National Capital Parks East
Summary
Acoustic Monitoring and Mist Netting
PI: Mikaila Milton
National Capital Parks-East (NACE) acoustic detection surveys were conducted in July-August 2016. There were 16 detector sites and a total of 538 detector nights. Big brown bat, red bat, hoary bat, little brown bat, northern long-eared bat, Indiana bat, and tricolored bat were detected. False positives of Indiana bats are known to occur with acoustic software packages, and visual examination of call characteristics will be needed to confirm. On Aug. 11-12, 2016, mist nets were set up at Fort Washington and Piscataway Park (National Colonial Farm). No bats were captured. Surveys will continue in 2017 and possibly 2018.
