Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Association (Chickamauga, Georgia)
African American Civil Rights Network
The Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Association in Chickamauga, Georgia, was founded in 2000 to preserve and document the Appalachian African American history of Walker County, Georgia. The Association's Walker County African American Museum and Multicultural Center also works to represents the entire Walker County citizenship.
The Association has awarded scholarships to high school students, provided signage and historical research for cemeteries, and authored and published books, newspapers articles, and essays. It also leads local historic preservation efforts to include the effort to place Chickamauga Lodge No. 221, Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliate on the National Register of Historic Places and raise funding for the Lodge's restoration.
In addition, the Association assists with highlighting the history and heritage of Appalachian African Americans of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit which includes Walker, Dade, Chattooga, and Catoosa counties.
Walker County African American Historical and Alumni Association became part of the African American Civil Rights Network in 2023.
The African American Civil Rights Network recognizes the African American Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the sacrifices made by those who fought against discrimination and segregation. Created by the African American Civil Rights Act of 2017, and coordinated by the National Park Service, the Network tells the stories of the people, places, and events of the U.S. African American Civil Rights Movement through a collection of public and private resources to include properties, facilities, and programs.
