Volunteer Spotlight: Justin "Skweez" Brehm

Raised on a farm in Missouri, Justin once dreamed of becoming a biochemist, but college was financially out of reach. So, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps to pursue his goals. “When the Marine Corps told me they’d pay me to do things I loved—like camping, marksmanship, and physical fitness—I thought I was making out on the deal,” he jokes.
That "deal" turned into a 22-year military career, during which Justin did, in fact, become a biochemist for the Corps. After retiring, he continued his service in a different form—as a contractor supporting the Department of Defense.
Justin stays connected to his military roots through the Sons of Blackwater, a veteran-based motorcycle club where he serves as chapter president. That role brought him to Spotsylvania National Battlefield, where the club partnered with local VFW Post 3103 for the VFW's National Day of Service—an initiative highlighting veterans’ continued contributions to their communities.
Alongside over 20 fellow veterans, Justin spent the day helping remove invasive species from the historic trenches of the battlefield. Battling ticks, snakes, and the heat, he never stopped smiling.
When asked what keeps him coming back to volunteer, Justin’s answer is simple: “Giving back. I want to keep giving back to my community and show support for our local veterans.”
We’re honored that Justin continues his selfless pursuit of service by volunteering with us. His commitment, humility, and leadership embody the very best of both military and community service.
