Tom enlisted in the United States Navy immediately after high school. After one year, he earned a ROTC scholarship at Penn State University, where he studied chemistry and Russian language. Upon graduation, he was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy. He served tours in Misawa, Japan; Washington, DC; and Monterey, CA; and on three Navy ships. Afterward he worked as an analytical chemist while pursuing a Computer Science education. He then switched careers and worked as a software developer.

Being a long-time national park enthusiast, Tom jumped at the chance to join the NPS Southeast Alaska Network, which offered the opportunity for him to do both science and IT under one roof.
