When I first met Admiral Vince Leggett, it felt like glimpsing into my future self. Every intricate detail about the Chesapeake Bay that I struggled to grasp seemed to flow effortlessly from him. Vince had a unique way of simplifying the complex, weaving his documented experiences into relatable lessons that illuminated challenges I wrestled with. It was as if he carried the Bay’s story within him, ready to share it with anyone eager to learn.
Beyond his academic and professional accolades, I came to know "Little Vinny from East Baltimore," as he fondly referred to himself. Growing up in West Baltimore, I found in Vince not just a mentor but a kindred spirit. We shared tears, laughter, a common dialect, and stories that transcended geography, making his tales more vivid and unforgettable. His authenticity bridged our shared histories and made every lesson he imparted resonate on a deeply personal level.
As a nonprofit founder, outdoor environmental educator, and environmental justice advocate who loves the Chesapeake Bay, I cherished every opportunity to learn from Vince—whether through a conversation, a text, or one of his emails from 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning, brimming with wisdom. Before his passing, Vince entrusted me with the honor of being his special assistant or "wingman," ensuring that his colossal vision for the Bay was carried forward. He often reminded me of the importance of reaching the next generation, saying, “Make sure the fourth graders understand this, so they can grow up to save nature and become stewards of the Bay and its incredible history—one shaped by African Americans and all who’ve contributed to its ecosystem.”
Just as Vince devoted his life to preserving the histories of others, I am committed to preserving his legacy. I pledge to ensure that the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation he founded will thrive, continuing his work for generations to come. As a colleague, student, and mentee of Vince Leggett, I am deeply honored to be part of "The Admiral’s Tribe." To all of you who share this love for the Chesapeake Bay, I am proud to call you my brothers and sisters in this mission.
