Surfing the Delta Breeze at Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta National Heritage Area
Of all the recreation jewels in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta NHA, perhaps most surprising is its international renown for windsurfing. Sherman Island County Park is a coveted location for wind enthusiasts of every stripe. The famed “Delta Breeze” that blows nearly continuously from May through August is ideal for windsurfers, kitesurfers, and foilboarders.
On a typical summer day there can be well over 100 sailors plying a three mile stretch of the Sacramento River. Windsurfers hew to the water’s surface, while kitesurfers and foilboarders defy gravity and catch big air, sometimes flying dozens of feet into the air before gently returning to the water. Foilboarders can hover over the water for a distance, suspended between water and sky.
