SkillBridge Spotlight: Sabina Shaub

Transitioning from military service to civilian life can feel daunting, but programs like SkillBridge are helping service members make that leap with confidence. Sabina Shaub, an Air Force veteran who separated in 2023, recently shared her inspiring story of how SkillBridge opened the door to a fulfilling career with the Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC).

A Distinguished Military Career

Prior to joining the military, Sabina worked as an architect but was ready for a new challenge. This led her to the Air Force, where she entered as an officer through Officer Training School (OTS) and earned a pilot slot. She ended up with her dream when she became a helicopter pilot—flying the HH-60G Pavehawk and UH-1N Huey on missions ranging from combat search and rescue (CSAR) to distinguished visitor transport. In addition to flying, Sabina served as a Flight Safety Officer and trained in both military and National Transportation Safety Board accident investigation protocols. During her service, she earned two master’s degrees—in Aeronautics and International Relations—and participated in multiple Air Force language programs. "I very much enjoyed my time in service," she reflects.

Discovering SkillBridge and the NPS

Sabina first learned about SkillBridge from a coworker who had successfully completed the program. Curious, she explored participating organizations and discovered the National Park Service—specifically the Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC)—was local to her area. With an interest in trades like carpentry and woodworking, and an architectural background, HPTC seemed like a perfect fit.

A Supportive Training Experience

"Each veteran enters military separation from a different place in life," Sabina explains. "That makes the SkillBridge experience unique for each of us." She found the HPTC team to be understanding, flexible, and committed to helping her succeed. Together, they identified the right role for her skills and interests. Their support didn’t end with SkillBridge—Sabina transitioned directly into a permanent position after separation from the Air Force.

Why SkillBridge Works

"The most important part of SkillBridge is that it provides an opportunity to try something new with no risk," Sabina says. Veterans continue to receive military pay during the program, and organizations incur no financial risk. This creates a win-win scenario where both sides can determine if the role is a good fit. For Sabina, that fit was clear—and led to a rewarding career with the National Park Service.

Advice for Service Members

Sabina encourages those considering SkillBridge to plan ahead and communicate clearly with their command. "Present how your unit will cover the mission without you, and outline your SkillBridge plan" she advises. She also recommends exploring opportunities with the NPS: "Many of the customs, history, and culture in the Park Service resemble the military. You’ll likely work alongside other veterans, and there are countless roles you might not realize fall under NPS." Her final words? "Good luck - and take the leap!"
