Long-term monitoring is key to understanding the condition of forests in the National Capital Region

NPS/Clare Hassler

As part of the ongoing conversation about managing resilient forests, short briefs on the resilience and regeneration status of each NCR park are now available. These summaries are based on the recent journal article "Overabundant deer and invasive plants drive widespread regeneration debt in eastern United States national parks" that analyzed 12 years of NPS forest vegetation monitoring data for northeastern national parks. The briefs, created by NCRN I&M staff in coordination the Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park, can be found in the links below:

Antietam National Battlefield (ANTI)
Catoctin Mountain Park (CATO)
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (CHOH)
