Top 10 Trip Tips to Tallgrass Visitors

    1. Visit Us Digital: The NPS App and park website have great info. Explore what we offer. We posted the latest updates of operations, trip ideas, and essential regulations. Maps are available online and the visitor center.

    2. Have a Plan and a Backup: This may not be your first rodeo. Weather and wildlife are unpredictable in the Midwest. Bison have spoiled many well-planned hikes by blocking the trail. You can try to wait them out, but they have no pressing schedule.

    3. Stay on the Path: The trails are the safest path for you and the prairie. Larger critters like snakes are easier to spot basking on the gravel. Smaller critters like ticks have less chance to reach the passer-by. The path provides clear sight of where your feet land on the otherwise rocky Flint Hills landscape.

    4. Hiking Boots: From the gravel parking lot to the stony trails, people prefer sturdy footwear. Backpackers love them for trekking in the backcountry. For the off-trail explorers, 9-inch highs provide better protection from the rocks and snakes.

    5. Sun Protection: Prairie landscape has very few trees. In the heat of summer and winter snow, you can feel the UVs hitting from all angles. Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen come highly recommended.

    6. Bug Spray: The prairie is a living ecology. Ticks, mosquitoes and chiggers have no preference over deer or people.

    7. Water & Snacks: Your body loses water in any temperature. Bring something to recharge. The enchanting landscape has a way of making everyone say, "maybe just a little further."

    8. Cell Phone: More than an emergency line. Light weight phones are great for quick pictures, candid memories, and inspiring memos. Don't let your photo disturb the wildlife. Keep your distance with the zoom. #SafeSelfie

    9. Bring a Friend: Two legs or four, traveling with others make the best memories. Pet friendly trails are availabe. Remember a leash! #DogTrails

    10. Leave What You Find: Enjoy your experience here. Leave the natural wonders and any artifacts for others to enjoy. It's great to show your kids the same wonders you enjoyed at their age. #LNT
