National Flag of the 8th Missouri
The 8th Missouri was organized in St. Louis on June 12, 1861 and went into action the next month against Confederate guerillas in Missouri. After securing Missouri for the Union, the 8th Missouri was placed in Grant’s command, and participated in the capture of forts Henry and Donelson. The regiment continued as part of the Army of Tennessee, fighting at Shiloh in Grant’s Mississippi campaign, and at the Siege of Vicksburg. After operations in the region, reenlisting veterans fought as part of General Sherman’s army in the March to the Sea, through the end of the war. The regiment suffered 206 deaths from all causes. This is another textbook example of the Civil War infantry national flag. The unit's name and battle honors are painted in gold.
